Mix, mingle, drink, people watch and art gawk. I always enjoy the Blanton’s First Friday evenings of art. Here is the scoop, straight from their website:
B scene: B cool
Art is boss.
Things Heat Up with Birth of the Cool.
Friday, March 6, 6 – 11 PM
Celebrate the opening of the much-anticipated exhibition, Birth of the Cool, at B scene—the Blanton’s monthly art party—with an evening of art and music devoted to 1950s West Coast style. Austin’s funky soul-jazz trio Time Out get things going at 6:30 PM in the Smith Building. At 9 PM, don’t miss a special performance by Blaze (Nu-Jazz/Funk/Experimental), voted Best Jazz Band in Austin for eight years in a row by the Austin Chronicle. Plus, groove to music by DJ Chicken George, as he spins in the atrium all night long, and enjoy tours of the new exhibition, art activities, free appetizers, a cash bar, and more. Cost: $5 members / $10 non-members. Buy tickets online or at the museum.

If you need an excuse to get out and shake that ass, this show is guaranteed to be one of the best dance parties of the year. These electro-rockers from down under know how to get all the too-cool-to-dance-in-public Austin kids vibrating like little Mexican jumping beans. It’s at Stubb’s and it’s affordable. $21.50 after the plethora of fees. Get ‘em here.

If you rise and shine on Saturday mornings and are able to get out of the house before noon, you cannot miss this event hosted by Toyota Venza and the Austin Farmers’ Market. The event, “Venza Taste of the Market” at Austin Farmers’ Market downtown at Republic Square Park, 4th and Guadalupe, hosts 12 local chefs working with more than two dozen farmers to prepare delicious and free(!) tasty dishes. Featuring chefs from The Driskill, ASTI, Fino, Aquarelle, Dai Due, Texas Culinary Academy and more. In addition, they will be giving out free herb plant starts! If you need more free incentives to get you here, even the parking is free in the garage at 3rd and San Antonio.
Did you know that the Sustainable Food Center hosts the Austin Farmers’ marker, as well as The Happy Kitchen and Community Gardens. Check ‘em out here…http://www.sustainablefoodcenter.org/

On September 15, 2008, when I was called into my boss’s office, I was shocked to think that in the midst of an economic downturn I would be receiving another promotion. The HR director was on the phone and a slip of paper was pushed across the desk at me detailing the $2342 I would be receiving for my…lay-off!
